Corsetry Project

This was a first year project with my tutor at the time Gail Playford. She has worked extensively in the industry and so I was pretty darn thankful to have her teach us this module. The theme for our corsetry project was burlesque and after choosing my model for the corset I decided upon a peacock theme as I felt the greens and blues would compliment her complexion and gorgeous auburn hair. We worked very systematically and first chose a style out of the big range of possibilities in corsets. I wanted to go for a simple design and use colours and subtle embellishment to make her captivating on the catwalk.
We looked at images of our corset pattern and replicated them by eye pinning on the stand. As my corset was of a modern design I used steel bone channels sewing lap and fell seams. I made the binding from the blue fabric I bought for the circle skirt. The last touch was to sew on some shortened peacock feathers onto the corset and the opposite side of the skirt. The skirt was a full circle skirt with green and blue netting coming out just lower than the hem. Love it, so pretty.

This beautiful lady is a friend from my Foundation course in costume construction. When I found out we had a corsetry project I nabbed her up straight away as my model. What a stunner. The theme for the corsetry project was burlesque and so looking at her colours and figure I decided on a peacock theme as I felt the colours of greens and blues really complimented her hair and eyes. The circle skirt really compliments her figure well next to the corset. To top it off I made a big peacock and ostrich feather fan which matched some feather embellishment on the corset.
